Marion Koopmans (DVM, PhD) is Head of the department of Viroscience at Erasmus Medical Center Rotterdam, The Netherlands. She is also Professor of virology at the Laboratory for Infectious Diseases of the National Institute of Public health. Her responsibilities include reference diagnostics, syndrome surveillance and emergency preparedness for viral diseases, including research aimed at improving the response capacity of a public health lab.
Her research interests focus enteric viruses, food-borne infections, emerging disease preparedness, and infections at the human-animal interface, with a particular focus on unravelling mechanisms underlying possible emergence of new health threats and optimizing the early detection and response. She is initiator and coordinator of a network of laboratories with responsibility for norovirus surveillance that agreed to share data and sequences internationally. She has authored over 300 papers in peer reviewed journals.
